Belonging

What does it mean to Belong?

It means you are attached, bound by birth, dependent.
It means you have found a place where you feel home and loved.

Belonging at First Presbyterian Church of Dallas looks like:

  • where people know your name, where you know the name of others.
  • where people ask you questions about the church, and you know how to answer, or you know who to talk to.
  • feeling supported and cared for by others in the church in your best, worst, and all the in between moments.
  • worshipping together as a church.
  • offering your time, prayers, and/or money.
  • experiencing a relational and spiritual change because of your affiliation with the church.
  • being yourself, sharing your imperfections and knowing that we will not always agree, but that the love of God binds us all together.
  • loving others in the church and those beyond.
  • wanting others beyond the church to be among this group of Christ followers.

We believe commitment leads to transformation. To truly belong you commit to being part of our community: attending regularly, participating in classes and gatherings, tithing, volunteering, praying for this community.
Membership is an outward sign of belonging. If membership is something you feel called to, join!
Joining, is an easy 2 step process:

  1. Meet with a pastor and/or attend a Table for Ten.
  2. JOIN!

At FPC Dallas we want all to feel a sense of belonging. Members and regular attenders worship and participate in the life of the church, some even participate remotely through zoom gatherings and online worship. All are welcome at FPC Dallas, and all can choose to belong!

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I be a ‘member’/join the church?

You can join the church two ways. You can meet with a pastor and/or attend a Table for Ten. You then fill out a membership form provided to you by a pastor.

How do I get baptized?

If you have never been baptized you will work with a pastor to schedule your baptism. You will also talk about what baptism means, and the importance of making an outward sign of your faith with this congregation.

Do I need to get baptized again?

If you have been baptized in a Christian church you do not need to be baptized again. In the Presbyterian denomination, one baptism is all you need.

How do I transfer my membership?

If you have completed the membership form, then church staff will process your paperwork and will reach out to your old congregation on transferring your membership.

Can I be a member of two churches?

It is completely your decision to join this church or not. To join means that you are willing to commit to being a part of this church through relationships, service, prayer, and financial giving. To commit to this church means you maintain a membership here, and not elsewhere.

How do I reaffirm my faith?/ How do I make a profession of faith?

To ‘reaffirm your faith’ means that you are willing to proclaim what it is you believe. To make a profession of faith means that you too are willing to profess what it is you believe. We do this every Sunday in worship when we publicly and communally affirm our faith. You are more than welcome to help lead an affirmation of faith during worship, or you can proclaim your faith in another way less publicly as well. Let us know what feels right for you.

What does attendance mean?

Attendance in church looks different today than 5 years ago, and remarkably different than 25 years ago. To attend church means that you commit to worshipping with us, whether online or in person.

Does membership cost money?

It does not cost money to join the church. Membership is a commitment of your time, your finances, your prayers. Traditionally people gave 10% of what they earned to the church. Tithing, giving your gifts to God looks different from person to person. A monetary commitment is not required.
